In basic 7, we learnt about the comparison operators below.
1. Greater than sign \(\Rightarrow \ >\)
2. Less than sign \(\Rightarrow \ <\)
3. Equal to sign \(\Rightarrow \ =\)
These signs or symbols are used to compare number values to see which one is larger or smaller than the other.
A number is said to be greater than another number if;
-
it is on the right hand side of the number it is being compared to on the number line.
Example:
100 is greater than 95 because on the number line, 100 is on the right hand side of 95.
-
its number of digits is more than the number of digits within the number it is being compared to.
Example:
1,000 is greater than 100 because 1,000 has 4 digits within the number whereas 100 has 3 digits within the number.
A number is said to be less than another number if;
-
it is on the left hand side of the number it is being compared to on the number line.
Example:
234 is less than 500 because on the number line, 234 is on the left hand side of 500.
-
its number of digits is less than the number of digits within the number it is being compared to.
Example:
10,000 is less than 1,000,000 because 10,000 has 5 digits within the number whereas 1,000,000 has 7 digits within the number.
A number is said to be equal to another number if;
-
they have the same value.
Example:
if \(x = 7\) and \(y = 2 + 5\), we say that \(x = y\).
Note:
The fact that two numbers have the same number of digits does not necessarily make them equal. Eg. \(345 \ne 453\)
